Many older coins have a silver content that allows them to be worked into rings, pendants, etc. Allegedly it was a common practice for sailors to make rings from quarters, by tapping them against the ships hull repeatedly, whereas others made theirs by tapping the edge with a spoon. Eventually it broadens, with the pattern on the rim face turning towards the inside. I made my ring from a silver half-dollar, meaning it was quite a large fit, and I wear it on my thumb. You can see the word Liberty on the (now) inner rim.
