What do you call yours? Cakes or buns? Treats can go home. Cornflakes can get in the bin. This is the real deal, the important issue. Here is the science*.

I missed the wonderful Kate starting this fight and only saw her public admission of wrongdoing. I couldn’t let this stand; Kate was RIGHT!

Long story short, 83 answers later, my thesis that only culchies say buns is correct. Culchies or people raised by culchies. The open text field of the survey (yes, I made a survey) offers some suggestions as to the name. The presentation of the rice crispie cakes in a fairy bun case seems to be a root cause of the confusion while others refer to the non-baked nature disqualifying cake (you don’t bake buns so?!) The vast majority of those who needed to reiterate in the text box were bun-sayers. The majority of respondents were between 35 and 50 with a majority of them being in the 35-39 age range. The survey will be left open.

The composition of the cakes was virtually uncontested and presented without further comment.

At a glance it is clear that the majority opinion is that they are called buns. This can be conceded as the country is indeed full of culchies. Some of them obviously have Dublin mammies though. And some Dubliners appear to have been raised by people from “down the country”. The trend was much stronger initially which leaves me wanting a greater value of N. The survey will be left open. Take the survey.

Of the main 4 population groups responding the data breaks down as follows:

  • 36% of respondents say cakes
  • 36% of respondents say their cakes are Dublin originating
  • I REST MY (bun) CASE

*no science was involved in the making of this rubbish
